Poinsettias Are Getting Better, More Colorful, All The Time

GAINESVILLE—When it comes to poinsettias, red can’t be beat, University of Florida poinsettia researchers say.

And the names with which poinsettias are christened show the plant’s true holiday spirit: Jingle Bells, Nutcracker, Candy Cane, Jolly Red.

But consumers’ love of red makes the flower industry see green. About $250 million a year worth of green to be exact. (more …)

GAINESVILLE – There is still time to register for the University of Florida’s &quotFood and the Environment” Internet course being offered this spring. But the Dec. 24 deadline is rapidly approaching.

&quotFood and the Environment” is open to graduate and upper-class students. The course is designed for working teachers in both formal and nonformal educational settings. VERO BEACH—Dov Borovsky wants to put mosquitoes on a diet.

Under the Borovsky three-day diet plan, legions of anorexic little buzzers would just starve to death. And that’s exactly the idea.

The University of Florida scientist says a mosquito “diet pill” he has perfected alters mosquito digestion, making it impossible for them to feed, lay eggs or survive. (more …)

GAINESVILLE – “Ecology and Management of Wildlife Invasions” will be offered as a distance education course this spring by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

The course will focus on introduced and invasive wildlife species and their effects at the community and ecosystem levels. Topics covered include traits of invasive and introduced species, environmental characteristics that promote invasions, use of introductions as a management strategy in conservation, as well as analyses of selected case studies. WEST PALM BEACH—Amid growing concerns over food safety, federal and state officials will hold a town meeting on the microbial risks for fresh fruits and vegetables at the University of Florida Palm Beach County Extension Service (Clayton Hutcheson Agricultural Center) on Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The town meeting is part of President Clinton’s new initiative to ensure the safety of imported and domestic fruits and vegetables. The initiative calls for advice and guidance, not new food safety regulations. (more …)

LAKE ALFRED—The Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN), a new agricultural weather data information service developed and operated by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, will be demonstrated Nov. 20 at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred.
