GAINESVILLE—Michael V. Martin, University of Florida vice president for agriculture and natural reSources, received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award from the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) at its 80th annual meeting in Bloomington, MN. on Nov. 30.

The award was presented to Martin after he left the University of Minnesota to begin leading the statewide teaching, research and extension programs of the UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more …)

GAINESVILLE—When poinsettias arrived on the U.S. Christmas scene as stage decor for holiday television specials in the 1950s and ’60s, there was red and only red.

Now, four decades later, there are about 100 varieties of poinsettias and almost as many colors and variations, says University of Florida horticulturist Jim Barrett. (more …)

Not anymore.

BRADENTON—The pumpkin pie of Thanksgiving future may come out of Don Maynard’s research laboratory.

The University of Florida researcher is working to develop a tropical pumpkin, or calabaza, that is easier to grow than traditional pie pumpkins. And as Maynard’s research progresses, Floridians soon may learn what pumpkin lovers in the tropics already know — calabaza tastes better. (more …)

SANFORD — The Aztecs and Incas amazed the Spanish conquistadors with their floating gardens, and now 500 years later you can impress your friends and neighbors with yours. A University of Florida extension agent has developed a floating garden with material available at local building supply stores that costs about $40.

The hydroponic garden’s biggest advantage is that it cuts down on pests.”Without soil, you eliminate about half the problems that plague Florida gardens,” said Richard Tyson, Seminole County extension agent with UF’sInstitute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more …)

GAINESVILLE: A dramatic shift in the demographics of Florida’s private forest landowners indicates the traditional farmer may be giving way to the more white-collar, absentee landowner, according to a recent University of Florida survey.

GAINESVILLE — As Florida manatees lumber into warmer waters this month for their winter respite, they’re admired for their unique appearance and lovable charm. But it’s that very singularity that University of Florida scientists say could be leading the gentle sea cows down the path to extinction.

Genetic testing and DNA comparisons of manatees from eight regions along the Western Atlantic have revealed that the animals living in Florida waters share dangerously low genetic diversity, making them more susceptible to diseases and more sensitive to climate changes, said Brian Bowen, a conservation geneticist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. With a few keystrokes, bugs are virtually coming at you from the computer screen. Virtual is the key word here, because these are cyberbugs for a cyberclub.
