APOPKA—The University of Florida will begin new teaching programs in January 2001 at its Mid-Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka, offering courses leading to degrees in agriculture, natural resource conservation and related sciences.

Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources, announced the start of teaching programs during dedication ceremonies at the center’s new $12.7 million addition here today (5-31). (more …)

UF Extension Program Helps Protect Wells From Pollution

GAINESVILLE—Florida residents who are poor readers or non-readers can learn how to protect their wells and septic systems from pollution with the help of a new educational program from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Until now, there simply has not been any effective information for these hard-to-reach groups about protecting drinking water in wells,” said Susan Williams, who coordinates the &quotKeep Your Well Water Clean” program for the UF’s statewide Cooperative Extension Service. “It’s something we really need because the state has 50 counties where 20 to 30 percent of the people are very poor readers.” (more …)

GAINESVILLE — Although all plants require different amounts of water to survive, there are some general precautions homeowners can take to cope with draught, according to a University of Florida horticultural expert.

“Plants that have to contend with sandy soil and full sunlight during late spring and summer months are the most susceptible to drought injury,” said Robert Black, consumer horticultural specialist at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more …)

Youth To Be Honored At Seatbelt Safety Luncheon In Tallahassee Tuesday

TALLAHASSEE-You don’t have to be big to make a big difference with seatbelt safety. Just ask the winners of the statewide safety belt poster contest when they receive their awards in Tallahassee on Tuesday during Buckle Up America Week.

It all started with artwork drawn by more than 70,000 youth in 40 counties showing ways to inspire others to buckle up. Eleven of the contest’s 12 winners will be in Tallahassee with their parents, teachers and extension agents on Tuesday for an awards lunch. Winners in grades K-8 have their artwork featured on a statewide calendar, and grades 9-12 have their artwork displayed on bumper stickers. (more …)

GAINESVILLE—Joan Dusky, professor and interim director of the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, has been named assistant dean for extension with the UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, effective June 1.

In announcing the appointment, Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources, said Dusky brings more than 20 years of IFAS experience to the UF’s statewide Cooperative Extension Service. (more …)

GAINESVILLE—In a new study, the first ever to measure the amount of folate needed by older women, University of Florida nutritionists say consuming folate-rich foods daily can benefit women well into their golden years.

“For the past decade, women of childbearing age have been encouraged to take extra folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects,” said Lynn Bailey, professor of human nutrition with the UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “Our study provides evidence that folate also plays a role in reducing a risk factor for heart disease in older women.” (more …)

GAINESVILLE — Conventional wisdom holds that buying produce at a farmers’ market is better than getting it from the grocery store, and a University of Florida agriculture expert says that’s true — for consumers and growers alike.

Consumers win because they can purchase fresher vegetables at a lower cost than they could at the supermarket, said Mickie Swisher, an associate professor of sustainable agriculture with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The plus for farmers is that they can get a better prices for their produce than they can when they sell through grocery stores, she said. (more …)

APOPKA—Members of the Florida Legislature and Board of Regents will dedicate a new $12.7 million addition to the University of Florida’s Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC) in Apopka on May 31.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. State Rep. Frederick Brummer, R-Apopka, will introduce state Sen. Daniel Webster, R-Orlando, who will present the dedicatory address. (more …)

MARIANNA—Breeders and cattlemen interested in consigning bulls and finding out more about the University of Florida’s new bull-testing facility are invited to an open house at UF’s North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
