GAINESVILLE, FL—The solution to one of man’s most vexing environmental problems may lie in one of nature’s most remarkable plants.

In an article scheduled to appear Thursday in the journal Nature, University of Florida scientists report discovering a fern that soaks up arsenic from contaminated soil. The first plant ever found to "hyperaccumulate" arsenic – a carcinogenic heavy metal often used as an herbicide – the fern may prove useful in cleaning up thousands of sites contaminated by arsenic from industrial, mining, agricultural or other operations around the world. MIAMI—To evaluate the long-term outlook for agriculture in Miami-Dade County, researchers with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are asking farmers and agribusinesses to participate in a survey.

During the first two weeks of February, UF’s Florida Agricultural Marketing Research Center will send questionnaires to farmers and agribusinesses in Miami-Dade County who have not responded to previous mailings. “This will be the last opportunity for individuals to provide input for UF’s agricultural study,” said Robert Degner, professor of agricultural economics and project director with UF’s Department of Food and Resource Economics in Gainesville. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — This year’s unseasonably cold winter and continuing drought conditions in the Southeast may lead to poor fishing come spring for anglers partial to the popular black crappie as well as other sport fish, according to a University of Florida researcher.

Mike Allen, an assistant professor of fisheries and aquatic sciences with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, said his research into the black crappie (pronounced croppie) indicates that low temperatures can have a negative effect on fish reproduction. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, FL— Aquarium hobbyists now can buy domestically grown neon tetra fish that are brighter and healthier than the imported variety, yet cost about the same, thanks to new techniques developed at the University of Florida.

For fish farmers, the good news is that the techniques finally make growing the small, colorfully striped fish a profitable venture. Farmers now can sell tetras for about 30 cents each instead of the 11 cents per fish they got when they had to compete with fish imported from Hong Kong, said Craig Watson, a tropical fish specialist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
