“The federal safety standard for nitrate-nitrogen in drinking water is 10 parts per million, but in some areas we’re finding levels in the 20 to 30 ppm range,” said David Hornsby, water quality analyst with the Suwannee River Water Management District in Live Oak. (more …)

TAMPA, Fla. — It’s a fashion show with a twist — one where the judges care about how the garment is put together and not just how it looks.

And then there’s the models. No waif-thin size zero models strut the runway here, these are just all American kids of all sizes modeling clothing that they have made themselves — from leather jackets to prom dresses, sports outfits and college interview clothes. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Despite the destruction of more than a half-million trees in the past year, the Florida Citrus Canker Eradication Program is viewed as necessary by nearly three-fourths of respondents in a new University of Florida survey.

“Most people seem to understand there is probably no other way to go about this,” said Marshall Breeze, an associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences who headed the study. “Roughly half the people surveyed said they strongly approve of the program, and another quarter said they somewhat approve. FORT LAUDERDALE—Like something from a low-budget horror movie, giant toxic marine toads have invaded South Florida. And while the exotic amphibians are available in pet stores, experts say there are far better — and safer — choices for companionship.

“Some pet dealers sell marine toads, but I can’t imagine why anybody would buy one,” said Frank Mazzotti, wildlife ecologist with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “Here in South Florida, you can’t even give them away. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—When it comes to cold-damaged ornamental plants, don’t be too hasty with the pruning shears, says a University of Florida horticulturist.

“Cutting away dead or dying leaves and branches may not be such a good idea,” said Bob Black, associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “With most landscape ornamentals, you can’t tell how much damage has been done until the plant starts new growth in the spring.” (more …)
