GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida boaters with an environmental conscience now can look for marinas with the equivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, thanks to a new state program.

The Florida Clean Marina Program encourages the state’s 1,800 marinas to adopt higher environmental standards in several areas, such as how chemicals are handled and how waste is disposed of. (more …)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Add an exotic new termite to the growing list of invasive pests gnawing their way across Florida.

A new termite, described as “ant-like in appearance,” has been identified in Dania Beach by a University of Florida entomologist who says the pest nests and forages at or above the soil surface. By contrast, typical subterranean termites build nests below ground and look whitish in color. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — If anyone is wondering what to do with millions of recalled Firestone tires, a University of Florida researcher has a suggestion: Grind them up and spread them on athletic fields and golf courses.

UF turfgrass specialist Grady Miller said ground-up tires, also known as crumb rubber, could help increase the durability of turf used in high-traffic applications. (more …)

ORLANDO — “Agriculture’s Uncertain Future: Unfortunate Demise or Timely Opportunity” is the title of a keynote address by Fred Kirschenmann, director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, to be presented at a University of Florida conference in Orlando on Thursday (6/28) at noon.

Kirschenmann’s speech at the Florida FIRST strategic planning conference will cover key issues facing the state’s $49 billion agricultural and natural resource industries. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Jesse Gregory, professor of food science and human nutrition in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, received the 2001 Centrum Center for Nutritional Science Award from the American Society for Nutritional Sciences at the organization’s recent annual meeting in Orlando.

The award from the nation’s largest society for nutrition research was presented to Gregory for his work on human nutrition and health, particularly for his research on folate and B-6 vitamins. Both are essential for maintaining good health. The award includes $1,500 and an engraved plaque from the American Home Products Company, which sponsors the annual award. (more …)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Four faculty members in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences received Honor Awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture during ceremonies in Washington, D.C., Monday (6/4).

The USDA’s highest recognition for outstanding contributions to agriculture and the consumer were presented to Raghavan Charudattan, Jonathan Day, Russell Nagata and Richard Raid by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman during ceremonies at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center.
