GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Children who participate in adult-supervised extracurricular activities after school are more likely to graduate from high school than latchkey kids who spend their afternoons without adult supervision, a new University of Florida study shows.
UF community sociologist Glenn Israel, lead author of the study, said programs such as school bands, sports teams or after-school clubs provide kids with opportunities to develop relationships with adults who reinforce the idea that school is important. The study indicates these relationships are so important that even good students can be at risk if allowed to go home alone. (more…)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—Until 1948, it seemed that Florida cattle production would be forever limited by the state’s withering heat and humidity.
Then came Alto “Bud” Adams, Jr.
Adams understood the problem firsthand. Growing up on his father’s ranch near Fort Pierce he’d raised the small, hardy Spanish cattle Florida was known for — they tolerated the climate but didn’t perform well in the marketplace. Retailers and consumers favored improved beef breeds like the big Herefords that thrived in the Midwest. (more…)

BRADENTON, Fla. — To help reduce algae levels in Lake Okeechobee, a University of Florida researcher says ranchers can eliminate phosphorus fertilizer without reducing the healthy growth of forage grasses.
Jack Rechcigl, director of UF’s Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, said grasses used in beef and dairy cattle grazing fields are capable of using phosphorus found deep in the soil. Plus, he said, phosphorus in grass animals eat is naturally recycled. (more…)
