BRISTOL, Fla.—To prevent school violence in Liberty County, University of Florida extension agents are helping at-risk youth learn to settle disputes peacefully, as part of a new federally funded delinquency prevention program.
Liberty Investing For Tomorrow, or LIFT, combines conflict resolution training with character development, tutoring and cultural enrichment, said Damon Miller, assistant dean for 4-H youth development with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. — To further improve service to industry and consumers, the University of Florida’s Sam Mitchell Aquaculture Demonstration Facility in Blountstown is expanding its horizons.
Launched in 1988 to help establish and promote catfish farming in West Florida, the Sam Mitchell Aquaculture Demonstration Facility has offered a variety of extension education programs. Now, with the help of a new coordinator, the facility’s new mission statement includes research and teaching. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida researchers say that food, paper and yard waste comprise 40 percent of Florida’s municipal waste, yet little attention has been paid to recovering those organic resources.
Everett R. Emino, professor of environmental horticulture with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, said that in addition to the abundance of organic matter, Florida has many farms, a crucial part of any composting program. (more…)

WEST PALM BEACH — Two interdisciplinary teams in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) were honored for outstanding contributions in research and extension at the Florida Associations of Extension Professionals (FAEP) conference in West Palm Beach, Sept. 13.
In addition, four extension faculty members received professional awards named in honor of former UF extension deans Marshall Watkins and John Woeste. (more…)

BELLE GLADE, Fla. — An experimental plot of rice known as Thai jasmine comprises only a tiny fraction of the rice grown annually in Florida, but that humble beginning may one day lead to thousands of acres of the prized crop if a University of Florida researcher is successful.
To accomplish that, Chris Deren has been bombarding rice seeds with gamma rays. (more…)

MELBOURNE, Fla. — In an effort to protect Florida residents from hurricane devastation, the University of Florida has joined federal agencies and private businesses to develop affordable wind-resistant homes.
The two-year project is part of a federal initiative to aid windstorm mitigation efforts in several states, said Pierce Jones, an energy extension specialist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Jones helps coordinate efforts by UF, an architect, a builder, a mortgage lender, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. (more…)
