UF Research: Dairy Farm Manure Could Be Useful To Nurseries

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Most manure produced by Florida’s dairy farms is stored in lagoons and spread on fields, a practice that can lead to pollution of rivers and lakes if not done correctly.
Now, researchers with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have come up with an environmentally friendly and economically attractive use for the manure: Compost it and substitute it for peat commonly used by nurseries as a potting material. (more…)
Lena Ma Receives the Discovery 2001 Award from Discovery Networks Europe and Royal Geographical Society

LONDON — Lena Ma, professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, received the Discovery 2001 Award from the Royal Geographical Society and Discovery Networks Europe during ceremonies in London Nov. 20.
Ma, an expert on the biochemistry of trace metals in UF’s soil and water science department, was recognized for discovering a fern that absorbs arsenic from contaminated soil. The award, which includes 5,000 British pounds to support her research program, was presented to Ma by Lucy Irvine, author of Castaway and other books. (more…)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.— The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation has donated $10,000 to the University of Florida’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation for research on cypress trees.
“The Marshall Foundation support will greatly advance the school’s development of fast-growing, high quality cypress for commercial planting,” said Don Rockwood, professor of forestry with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and coordinator of the cypress research. “Other benefits of the genetic improvement program include assembly and preservation of genetic diversity in cypress,” he said. BRADENTON, Fla. — Pumpkin pie may be one of the most traditional items on the Thanksgiving menu, but it’s time Americans started thinking outside the crust - with a tropical twist, says a University of Florida researcher.
“Pumpkin is a truly versatile food,” said Don Maynard, horticultural sciences professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “In Latin America and the Caribbean, it’s a staple crop, used in everything from soup to stews to candy. PLANT CITY, Fla.—Grand opening ceremonies for a new joint teaching program of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and Hillsborough Community College (HCC) will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the college’s Plant City campus.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three professors in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences were honored at the recent national meetings of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) and American Society of Agronomy (ASA) in Charlotte, N.C.
Ramesh Reddy, graduate research professor and chair of UF’s soil and water science department, received SSSA’s 2001 Soil Science Applied Research Award and Nick Comerford, professor in the department, was elected a Fellow of the society. David Sylvia, professor of soil microbiology, was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA). (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. —Two 4-H camps will be closed and the statewide 4-H program will be severely impacted by state budget cuts, said Damon Miller, assistant dean for 4-H programs at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).
4-H Camp Cherry Lake near Madison and 4-H Camp Cloverleaf near Lake Placid will be closed. He said alternate funding plans and structures were considered by the administration before the closures were announced last week by Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources.
