QUINCY, Fla.—Dedication ceremonies for “The Fountain H. May, Sr. Building” at the University of Florida’s North Florida Research and Education Center in Quincy will be held April 3, naming the facility in honor of an agricultural leader who has helped introduce Florida nursery products around the world.
Construction on the 28,000-square-foot facility started in Dec. 2000, made possible by a $5-million appropriation from the Florida Legislature. (more…)

BRADENTON, Fla. — A new kind of moonlight will soon brighten yards, but it comes from the University of Florida and it’s best seen during the day.
Florida Moonlight, a white-leaved, white-veined caladium variety developed by UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, has been approved for release to commercial growers, said Baldwin Miranda, leader of UF’s caladium breeding program. (more…)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—It’s not just cows, sows and plows anymore. The 4-H youth development program is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a discussion about youth development priorities and is sharing the results with the citizens of Florida.
A press conference and 4-H rally will be held on the steps of the old capitol building at 1:00p.m. Tuesday, where the State Conversation on Youth Development Report will be presented. A resolution to recognize 4-H in will be sponsored by State Rep. Hogan. An evening auction with a surprise award announcement at the Capital City Country Club will close the day. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—With termite damage at record levels, University of Florida pest control experts say a new statewide building code will help stop the tiny home wreckers.
“Termite damage and control costs in Florida exceed $500 million annually, but that will be reduced by the new Florida Building Code, making builders more responsible for termite protection,” said Phil Koehler, professor of entomology with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Average wheat varieties could be given superior bread-making qualities, thanks to genetic technology developed at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
“Traditionally, the bread-making characteristics of wheat differ from one variety to another,” said Indra Vasil, graduate research professor emeritus with UF’s Department of Horticultural Sciences and leader of a group that developed the technology. “Wheat that’s easy to grow doesn’t always make good bread, but if it did we could save time and money.” (more…)
