UF Hosts Tropical Forest Conference Feb. 25-26

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—An interdisciplinary conference, “Working Forests in the Tropics: Conservation through Sustainable Management,” will be held at the University of Florida’s Reitz Union Feb. 25-26, 2002.

Hosted by UF’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation and the Forest Management Trust, the conference will provide a forum for the sharing and synthesis of scientific, management and policy information about tropical forests, said Daniel Zarin, associate professor of tropical forestry. The school is part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

The judges are University of Florida floriculture experts, and they’re holding trials — variety trials, that is — where new varieties of popular flowers are tested in different locations around the state to determine which ones grow best under local conditions. (more…)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—Florida’s battle against the growing number of exotic, invasive plants and pests will be enhanced by a new $3.8 million quarantine and research facility now under construction at the University of Florida’s Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce.

The 17,000-square-foot facility, authorized by the Florida Legislature in 1999 and scheduled for completion in May 2003, will be used by scientists to contain, evaluate and release non-pathogenic organisms for biological control of invasive plants and pests, said Walter Tabachnick, professor of entomology and interim director of UF’s Fort Pierce center.
