IMMOKALEE, Fla.—Skeptics said it couldn’t be done, but University of Florida researchers have demonstrated that blueberries can be a commercial success in South Florida’s hot climate, giving farm workers another source of income.

Until recently, the crop had never been grown south of the Lake Placid area because it was thought the plants required 200 to 400 “chill hours” under 45 degrees Fahrenheit to produce a crop the following spring. (more …)

ORLANDO—Speaking to more than l,000 scientists from 50 nations at a biotechnology conference in Orlando, June 24, a University of Florida scientist said regulatory requirements for transgenic foods should be gradually relaxed and lifted.

“When the United States established safety standards for biotechnology more than 15 years ago, they were adopted worldwide by the biotech industry, and now it’s time for the U.S. to assert its leadership once again by relaxing many of these requirements,” said Indra Vasil, graduate research professor emeritus with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. JASPER, Fla.—To cash in on ecotourism — now the fastest growing segment of the nation’s $584 billion-a-year travel industry — rural communities need to flex their marketing muscles and promote their natural attractions more aggressively.

“Many of Florida’s best environmental attractions are hidden in out-of-the-way places that aren’t well known,” said Taylor Stein, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “Rural communities need to make visitors aware of these environmental jewels, or they will go to the mainstream tourist attractions that are heavily promoted.” (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—It sounds like the name of an exotic new drink, but tropical soda apple has been more aptly described as the “plant from hell,” say University of Florida researchers who have developed a natural way to control the rapidly spreading weed.

“The highly invasive plant, which forms a dense and thorny thicket that is impenetrable to animals and people, has been classified by the federal government as one of the nation’s most noxious weeds,” said Raghavan Charudattan, professor of plant pathology with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “In Florida and seven southeastern states, it’s literally taking over, displacing native plant species in infested areas.” (more …)

CASSELBERRY, Fla.—You don’t have to be big to make a big difference, at least not if you are Stacey Hillman, 11. A member of the Seminole County 4-H club, Hillman was one of two 4-H’ers named America’s top ten youth volunteers for 2002 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

For her 4-H project, Hillman started “Pennies to Protect Police Dogs” in March 2000 when she was nine years old. In two years, the sixth-grader has raised more than $150,000 through collection drives, community donations and fundraising. The funds purchased 175 bulletproof vests for police dogs in Florida and in other states. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Summer is here and more than 2,500 youth will embark on “Ed-Ventures” at Florida’s four 4-H camps to make memories that last for a lifetime.

It’s a trip that might have been scrapped, were it not for an active concern by children and their families last fall, as well as new management strategies and financial support for the 4-H camps through the Florida 4-H Foundation. (more …)
