GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Thanks to Florida’s mild climate, gardeners can grow an abundant, year-round vegetable supply - even during the fall and winter as temperatures drop. However, selecting the proper varieties for this time of year is critical, says James Stephens, the author of Vegetable Gardening in Florida, a book published by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Concentrate on lettuce, cabbage, radishes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and other varieties that can take the cooler weather,” said Stephens, a UF professor emeritus of horticultural sciences. “Stay away from tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash and the warm-season vegetables.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The value of all types of agricultural land — except citrus — continued its upward trend during the past year, according to a new University of Florida survey.

Land purchases by developers, speculators and government agencies, as well as individuals who want land for second homes, recreational uses and larger home sites away from urban areas, helped drive up the value of most property, said John Reynolds, an agricultural economist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Wayne Smith, director of the University of Florida’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, has received the Living Legend Award from the Florida Forestry Association for a lifetime of distinguished service.

The award, which was presented to Smith at the association’s annual meeting in Panama City Beach Sept. 5, is the organization’s highest honor. It was presented to Smith by Jeff Doran, executive vice president of the association. Doran said the award honors Smith for more than 35 years of dedicated service, including educating professionals, leading effective research and extension programs, serving the profession and supporting the industry. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Water and Florida Citrus, a new comprehensive guide published by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, provides growers, grove managers, technicians and irrigation specialists with detailed information on a wide range of water management topics.

“The 603-page book with color photos includes 39 chapters and 14 appendices that provide citrus growers with much of the information required to design, operate and maintain water management systems,” said Brian Boman, an associate professor at UF’s Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce and editor of the book.
