UF Extension to Host Marketing Workshop For Agricultural Community

Homestead, Fla. — The agricultural industry is undergoing rapid changes with retail consolidation, globalization, product proliferation and changing consumer demands. To help the South Florida agricultural community stay abreast of these changes, the University of Florida Extension Service is hosting a marketing workshop, “Staying Competitive in Agriculture: Understanding Your Market,” Dec. 3, 2002, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Homestead.

The seminar will be held at the Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension Auditorium, 18710 S.W. 288th St. (Biscayne Drive at Redland Road) and is intended for all industry sectors, including nursery, vegetable and fruit growers, along with brokers and landscape companies. Presenters will include two UF professors and two private-sector industry leaders. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Plenty of people would agree that Thanksgiving is a prime time to gobble down delicious turkey. But a University of Florida food-safety expert warns that careless cooking techniques can leave diners feeling less than thankful.

Because many people buy frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving, a focus on safety should begin with the thawing process, said Gary Rodrick, a food science and human nutrition professor at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more …)

SARASOTA, Fla. — Heads will roll as a U.S. Department of Agriculture plan to control imported fire ants is put into practice this month in Florida.

The plan, based on research by Sanford Porter, a University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences adjunct professor employed by the USDA, introduces tiny South American phorid flies to the United States to control the pesky ants, whose spread has been unaffected by poisons and other measures. 4-H Clubs Celebrate Make A Difference Day By Helping Others

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Contrary to popular images of today’s youth as apathetic, Make a Difference Day found 4-H members making elderly residents of a nursing home smile, helping children who are terminally ill ride horses and sewing quilts for newborns.

More than 200 people turned out for an Equine Fun Day with 12 terminally ill children from Dreams Come True in Jacksonville. Hosted by the Westside Wranglers 4-H Club, the benefit featured pony rides, horse activity games, a fall festival and a hayride. It was part of the annual national day of giving back to the community organized by USA Today. (more …)

New Agreement Will Send UF Students To Southern France

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A new agreement between the University of Florida and a small agricultural college in southern France enables students to get credit for tasting different types of Roquefort cheese. Ooh la la!

Cheese is not the only item on the curriculum, of course. It is just one small part of an eight-week program that includes a crash course in speaking French, an introduction to European agriculture and an internship at a French farm. (more …)
