GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Nestled in the far southwest corner of the University of Florida campus right next to some of Gainesville’s busiest areas is a surprisingly large expanse of wilderness.
Dubbed the Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL), it was set aside for teaching and research in 1994 and encompasses 45 acres of lush greenery. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Don’t be surprised to find a red elf in your house this holiday season.
No, it isn’t Santa, blushing after drinking too much eggnog. Red Elf is the name of one of more than 30 new varieties of poinsettia plant available this year, said University of Florida horticulturist James Barrett. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — E.T. York, former chancellor of Florida’s State University System and the creator of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and his wife Vam have endowed a lecture series for the American Society of Agronomy (ASA).
“I think this will provide an opportunity for agronomy professionals to hear a message from globally prominent people in agriculture,” York said. “These lectures will highlight new directions in agricultural sciences and provide an interesting, challenging message to faculty and graduate students.” (more…)

UF Extension To Manage Agricultural Mediation

Florida offers mediation to people or organizations that have received an adverse decision from a United States Department of Agriculture agency in relation to a disaster or loan-related program. This process is handled by the Florida Agriculture Mediation Service (FAMS).
FAMS, which is sanctioned and funded by USDA, will now be managed by the University of Florida’s Cooperative Extension Service, which is a part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which is the world’s largest federation of scientists, has named University of Florida distinguished professor P. K. Nair one of its 2002 fellows.
AAAS members bestow the award for efforts to advance science or its applications. Nair, an agroforestry professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, has been a member of the AAAS and a UF professor for 15 years. He is the only UF faculty member to receive the honor for 2002. (more…)
