TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Charles Bronson received the Florida 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florida 4-H Foundation’s annual fundraising auction in Tallahassee last week.

“His commitment to youth development and passion for excellence are evident,” said Sam Ard, last year’s award recipient and this year’s presenter. “He has been a real asset to the 4-H program.” (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Evan Vlachos, a professor of sociology and civil engineering and the associate director of the International School for Water Resources at Colorado State University (CSU), will be the 2003 Wershow Distinguished Lecturer April 9 at the University of Florida.

His presentation — The Future of Agriculture in the 21st Century: Surviving in the Era of Globalization and in a Transforming Environment — will be at 4 p.m. in room 190 at UF’s Levin College of Law. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gainesville will be the first stop April 2 on a nationwide tour for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Food Safety Mobile — a colorful, eye-catching educational vehicle staffed by USDA and University of Florida food safety experts with lots of free advice for consumers.

After visiting Albertsons supermarket at 2323 Northwest 13th Street in Gainesville, the Food Safety Mobile will stop in St. Petersburg and Tampa, said Amy Simonne, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, which is sponsoring the Florida tour. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— To help protect agriculture from terrorism, the University of Florida is one of five land-grant universities in the nation coordinating a new National Plant Diagnostic Network that will provide an early warning about pests and diseases.

“Agriculture is an inviting target for terrorists,” said Gail Wisler, a professor and chair of the plant pathology department in UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). “It’s also a ‘soft’ target because it covers an enormous amount of land under decentralized management and would have a significant economic impact.” (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—V. Alaric Sample, president of the Pinchot Institute for Conservation in Washington, D.C., will speak April 23 at the University of Florida’s John Gray Distinguished Lecture Series at the Sheraton Gainesville Hotel. The topic of his 10 a.m. presentation is “Private Forests, Public Value and Emerging Capital Markets.”

Sample’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, keynotes the 34th annual symposium for the Florida Division of the Society of American Foresters. Hosted by UF’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, the symposium begins April 23 at 8 a.m. and concludes April 24 at noon. (more …)

In fact, stress has become an epidemic, according to a University of Florida management specialist who says nearly half of all employees worry about losing their job. Others say they are “often or very often” burned out by their work. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— Kenneth R. Tefertiller, professor emeritus in the University of Florida’s food and resource economics department and former UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources, was inducted Feb. 11 into the 2003 Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame in Tampa.

Considered the industry’s premier award, the honor is reserved for those who have made outstanding contributions to Florida’s $64 billion agriculture and natural resource industries. It includes a plaque in the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame building at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. More than 100 prominent leaders have been inducted into the hall of fame during its 25-year history. (more …)
