GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Marguerite Shotwell is a lot like any other senior at the University of Florida. She studies for tests, worries about her grades and looks forward to graduation.
There’s one key difference, though Shotwell is 82 years old. Her age will earn the octogenarian the designation as oldest graduate ever from UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and she is believed to be one of the oldest graduates in the university’s history. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Summer is almost here, and parents can send their children to one of Florida’s four 4-H centers for a week of fun and learning.
Youth don’t have to be 4-H members to join the fun, and the possibilities are as endless as campers’ imaginations. Campers ages 8 to 14 choose marine camp or environmental “ed-venture” camp, while campers ages 10 to 18 can venture to shooting sports and sport fishing camp. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— You’re not alone. Most people have thousands — probably millions — of tiny bugs called mites living in their hair and on their skin. And now a University of Florida researcher says the microscopic mites may be linked to thinning hair, acne and other skin conditions.
“Many people don’t like the idea of bugs living in their hair or on their skin, and some get really bent out of shape just thinking about it,” said Jerry Butler, a professor of entomology with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “For some folks, it’s enough to make your skin crawl. And bathing won’t wash them off.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — To most people, model homes mean oversized bathtubs, fireplaces and lush lawns, but a new take on the concept by University of Florida researchers features some highlights more likely to appeal to the greener side.
Floors made of renewable bamboo, energy-efficient fluorescent lights, a water-saving washing machine and dishwasher, a yard filled with native drought-tolerant plants and other energy-efficient and environmentally friendly upgrades are what visitors will find in the model home for a new “green” development in Gainesville.
