GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Opposition to biotech crops and foods is based on politics and ideology rather than science, says a University of Florida researcher who believes the regulatory requirements for plant biotechnology should be lifted.

“The biotechnology community which includes academia, industry and the regulatory agencies has been patient and on the defensive for too long,” said Indra Vasil, a graduate research professor emeritus with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “It is time now to shift the debate from unnecessary regulation to deregulation. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Roll out the red carpet and get ready for a party that’s going to be a doozy.
More than 540 4-H teens from 58 Florida counties will pour into town Monday for the annual green-and-white invasion called State 4-H Congress for a week of fun, socializing and education. Accompanied by more than 100 adults and 280 guests, 4-Hers will travel with their “passports” to workshops, fun shops and competitive events as they push 4-H into the next century during: “Congress 101: Breaking New Ground With Old Tradition.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The Council for Sustainable Florida has selected the Florida Sea Grant Program to receive the top award in its field in the 2003 Sustainable Florida Awards competition.

Florida Sea Grant, based at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, received the award July 17 for best practices in the university category in the annual awards competition, which recognizes organizations, businesses and universities that have demonstrated a commitment to Florida’s long-term prosperity and overall environmental health. VERO BEACH, Fla.—As Florida hits its peak period for mosquito-borne diseases, the state is seeing an increased number of infected sentinel chickens and horses, and University of Florida medical entomologists are warning Floridians to take precautions.

The number of birds and horses infected with West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, is greater than last year at this time, and the number of horses with EEE has more than tripled this year, reaching epidemic levels in North Florida, UF scientists and state officials say. (more…)

4-H Members Convene In Tallahassee During Special Session

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—As the Florida Legislature convenes this week for a special session, 219 teen 4-H members from 39 counties are holding their own legislative session across the courtyard in the Old Capitol. With state legislators in town, 4-H members will have an opportunity to observe the legislature in action and communicate with elected representatives.

“Due to the special legislative session, we moved our event to the Old Capitol,” said Ami Neiberger-Miller, one of the adults advising the youth-driven event. “With the change comes an excellent opportunity for our youth to see how the ‘real’ legislature works and to meet with their representatives.” (more…)
