FORT PIERCE, Fla.—P.J. van Blokland, a professor of food and resource economics at the University of Florida in Gainesville, has joined the faculty of UF’s Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce.
The transfer, which coincides with the beginning of the fall semester at UF, was announced by Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—When General Nutrition Corporation, which has more than 5,000 GNC stores in the United States, Canada and other countries, wanted to develop an online training program for their employees, the company asked the University of Florida for help.
As a result, the company and university formed a new business-education partnership, creating GNC University, which is a series of professional nutrition education courses available to store employees via distance education. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—When it comes to controlling insect pests on crops, some farmers are saying hello to birds.
“We have found an environmentally friendly way that may help control insects that feed on crops, and it’s literally for the birds,” said Kathryn Sieving, an associate professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “By planting sunflowers near valuable crops, we can attract birds that feed on insects.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Finding the right balance between conserving Latin America’s tropical forests and using them for economic development is the goal of a new University of Florida graduate research and training program.
“The traditional starting point for conserving tropical forests has been the creation of parks that protect them from people,” said Daniel Zarin, an associate professor of tropical forestry with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “Parks are a critical cornerstone for conservation, but parks alone will not suffice. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Timothy White, a University of Florida professor of forest genetics, has been named director of UF’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Selecting the right construction materials and methods can reduce the need for pesticides as the first line of defense against termites, including the highly destructive Formosan termite now spreading throughout Florida and the Southeast.
“Instead of using the typical methods of controlling termites, builders can now help prevent pest problems before they start,” said Pierce Jones, a professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “It can be cheaper in the long run.” (more…)
