GAINESVILLE, Fla.—For the second year in a row, students in the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences are national champions in the 2003 Academic Quiz Bowl held July 27-29 at the national meeting of the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) in Montreal, Canada.

Kristin Gose, Mark Vuckovic and Vince Smith, seniors majoring in food and resource economics, were among 36 teams from other universities and colleges in the United States and Canada competing in the tournament. Gose is from Sebring, Fla.; Vuckovic is from Keystone Heights; and Smith is from Gainesville. (more…)

Researchers: Fire May Help Combat Fatal Dogwood Epidemic

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—There may be hope for that embattled Southern icon, the dogwood tree, say University of Florida researchers.

Most dogwoods in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have died in recent years, the victims of an epidemic devastating dogwoods up and down the East Coast. So Mike Jenkins, a park ecologist, was surprised to discover in a recent survey of parklands that dogwoods in a few spots had not only survived the fungal disease, but flourished. The common thread: The three plots, part of land set aside for research, had all been part of an area burned in a forest fire more than two decades ago. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Robert Cousins, a Boston family professor of nutrition at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, has been named winner of the 23rd annual Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nutrition Research.

He was recognized for his contributions to micronutrient research, including his wide-ranging and continuing focus on the metabolism and function of zinc in the immune system. (more…)
