UF/IFAS Extension Dean Stepping Down

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—After eight years as head of Florida Cooperative Extension for the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), Christine Waddill is stepping down, effective October 6, 2003.
Waddill has served as UF/IFAS dean for extension and director of Florida Cooperative Extension since 1995. In a September 25 email message to faculty and staff, Waddill said that for both professional and personal reasons she had decided to change her role in UF/IFAS. She also indicated that UF Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources Mike Martin asked her to consider taking on the directorship at the UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center in Belle Glade. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Wine drinkers have heard plenty of good news in recent years, with study after study pointing to health benefits for people who enjoy a glass or two every evening.
Now researchers at the University of Florida say the red wine grape’s country cousin — the muscadine — may produce a wine healthier than the reds you see in your local grocery store. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Chris Somerville, director of the plant biology department at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and a professor at Stanford University in California, will be the featured speaker Sept. 24 in the University of Florida’s Sesquicentennial Celebration Lecture Series.
Somerville’s presentation on the future of plant genetic engineering will be at 7:30 p.m. in Powell Hall at UF’s Florida Museum of Natural History. The lecture is free and open to the public. (more…)
FAMU President Fred Gainous To Appear At Banquet For UF Alumni

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—This week’s football game between the University of Florida and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University may be a first, but for FAMU president Fred Gainous, it will also be a homecoming.
Gainous will be among 23 African-American UF graduates to be honored at a banquet on the UF campus the night before the game. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Trade disputes over the use of genetically modified organisms in agricultural crops will be the focus of an international conference Oct. 30-31 in San Antonio, Texas.
“Border disputes are becoming a worldwide problem for farm exports,” said Andrew Schmitz, a University of Florida professor of food and resource economics who is coordinating the conference. (more…)
