NAPLES, Fla.—The competitiveness of Southern agriculture in global markets will be one of the key topics discussed Dec. 3-4 at the Third International Agricultural Trade and Policy Conference in Naples, Fla. The conference is expected to attract agricultural producers and industry leaders from across the nation.
“With new and existing trade agreements drastically changing the competitive outlook for producers, agriculture in the southern United States is clearly at a crossroads,” said John VanSickle, a professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, which is hosting the conference at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Four Japanese-type plum varieties, bred in Florida for subtropical growing conditions, may become the basis for a new commercial fruit crop in the state.
“Until now, we could not grow plums commercially in Florida because our winters are too warm. However, we’ve used conventional breeding to modify plum varieties for Florida climatic conditions,” said Wayne Sherman, a professor of fruit genetics at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Martha Rhodes Roberts, the retiring deputy commissioner with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, has been named director of industry relations for the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).
Roberts’ appointment was announced today by Michael Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources and chief executive officer of UF/IFAS. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—E. Jane Luzar, associate dean of the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, is the 2003 recipient of the Morton Wolfson Faculty Award for outstanding service to students.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The value of agricultural land in all regions of the state increased during the past year, ending the double-digit drop in prices for orange and grapefruit groves in two previous years, according to a new University of Florida survey.
“The jump in values across the state can be attributed to the continued strong demand for farmland by developers, speculators, government agencies, as well as those who want land for homes and recreation away from urban areas,” said John Reynolds, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
