FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.—The University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary Oct. 22, highlighting “decades of outstanding service” to the residents of Southeast Florida.
“The 50th anniversary ceremonies, which begin at 10 a.m., will be another milestone in the center’s service in Broward and Miami-Dade counties as well as other areas of Southeast Florida,” said Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Eric Triplett, a professor of plant physiology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, has been named chair of the University of Florida’s microbiology and cell science department.
Triplett succeeds Edward Hoffmann, who is retiring from UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences after more than 35 years of service, including 14 years as chair of the department. (more…)

BALM, Fla.—Groundbreaking ceremonies for the University of Florida’s new Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm, Fla., will be held October 28, marking the beginning of a $15 million regional facility that will consolidate programs now located at Bradenton and Dover.
Congressman Adam Putnam, UF Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources Mike Martin and UF Trustee Carlos Alfonso will speak at the 10 a.m. event, which is expected to attract agricultural producers, researchers, educators and other state officials from around the state. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— Florida golf courses could cut their water use by as much as 20 percent and still keep their fairways green, a new study by University of Florida researchers suggests.
But with golfers increasingly demanding verdant fairways year-round, the researchers say, golf course managers are often afraid to scale back their water use. (more…)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—Two little biocontrol bugs with big appetites for invasive Australian melaleuca trees are now available by mail order from the University of Florida.
“South Florida residents who want to put the bite on melaleuca can now order the bugs directly from UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences,” said Ken Gioeli, a St. Lucie County extension agent in Fort Pierce. “Getting these beneficial insects is as easy as a phone call or visit to our Web site.” (more…)
