IMMOKALEE, FLA.—As the Florida citrus industry ramps up its winter harvesting season — picking a record 252 million boxes of oranges over the next six months — a small but growing number of producers are beginning to use mechanical harvesters that allow one person to collect more than 90 boxes per hour.

The new tree-shaking harvesting systems are nine times more efficient than picking oranges by hand and will help the state’s $9 billion citrus industry compete with low-cost producers such as Brazil, according to researchers with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. MELROSE, Fla. — If you live in an urban area, you probably think of the turkey as a shockingly stupid bird that dies at Thanksgiving but lingers in your refrigerator for weeks.

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Eugene Trotter, a professor and director of the Wedgworth Leadership Institute for Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Florida, received the Outstanding Leader Award during the recent annual meeting of the International Association of Programs for Agricultural Leaders in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Trotter received a plaque for “vision and dedicated service spanning a quarter of a century in two states, and preparing talented young leaders for the challenging years ahead.” It was presented to him by Bill Pope, executive secretary of the association that includes members in 40 states and many foreign countries. GAINESVILLE, Fla. –- It looks like something that’s been here for a million years, like a multi-ton rock that has been worn smooth by the forces of time.

But that moss-covered “boulder” on display at the University of Florida isn’t really a boulder at all. It’s a living sculpture, a jumble of decaying vegetation and still-thriving plants. And with luck, it will literally take root on the UF campus. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—With the addition of 13 new monitoring stations, the Florida Automated Weather Network — also known as FAWN — now covers the state with 33 stations linked to University of Florida computers in Gainesville.

In addition to new monitoring stations, the network includes improved communications technology for collecting weather data and new computers to service the FAWN Web site. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Pedro A. Sanchez, the 2002 World Food Prize Laureate and recipient of the 2003 MacArthur Fellowship, will be the featured speaker Nov. 13 in the 2003 E.T.York Distinguished Lecturer Series at the University of Florida.

Sanchez, who is director of tropical agriculture and senior research scholar at the Earth Institute of Columbia University in New York City, will discuss what needs to be done to end hunger in Africa. He will speak at 10:30 a.m. in the Rion Ballroom of the UF Reitz Union. The lecture, sponsored by UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, is free and open to the public. (more …)
