Patrick Smith To Speak March 18 At UF/IFAS York Distinguished Lecturer Series

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Patrick Davis Smith, a widely published author who was named the Greatest Living Floridian by the Florida Historical Society in 2002 and inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 1999, will be the featured speaker March 18 in the 2004 York Distinguished Lecturer Series at the University of Florida.

Smith, whose topic will be “Florida – A Land Remembered,” will speak at 7 p.m. during the annual Gamma Sigma Delta banquet at the Reitz Union. The presentation, which is the 18th in the York lecturer series, is free and open to the public. Smith will be available to sign his book with the same title on March 18 at 3 p.m. at the UF Hilton Hotel and Conference Center. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—In response to the boom in organically grown foods, the University of Florida is one of the first universities in the nation to start a research and education center for organic agriculture.

The new Center for Organic Agriculture, which is a public-private partnership between the university and organic farmers, will lead to improved production practices that will help producers and consumers, said Mickie Swisher, an associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Land at UF’s Pine Acres Experimental Station near Gainesville will be used for research. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Daniel Ogden, a consultant whose 40-year career includes university teaching and public service, will be the 2004 Wershow Distinguished Lecturer April 2 at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, Holland Hall, Room 190. His 4 p.m. presentation — The Making of Agricultural Policy — is free and open to the public.

Established in 1985 by James S. and Dorothy Wershow, the lecture series is sponsored by the Agricultural Law Center in UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in collaboration with the Wershow family. (more …)

ORLANDO—Scientists, growers, corporate representatives and other industry officials from 30 nations will attend the ISHS International Symposium on Protected Culture in a Mild-Winter Climate, March 23-27 in Kissimmee, Fla.

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Changes in the leadership of two programs at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences will occur over the next few months. New administrators have been named for the SHARE (Special Help for Agricultural Research and Education) private support program and the Wedgworth Leadership Institute for Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Gene Trotter, a professor who currently directs the Wedgworth Leadership Institute, will replace Melda Bassett, assistant vice president and director of the SHARE program, when she retires June 30. (more …)

FORT PIERCE, FLA.—Brian Boman, an associate professor in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), has been named coordinator of a statewide program promoting the use best management practices or BMPs by growers and residents.

The appointment was announced by Mike Martin, UF vice president for agriculture and natural resources in Gainesville, who said Boman’s success in developing and promoting BMPs for the citrus industry qualifies him to lead the statewide education program. (more …)
