New UF Marriage-Prep Course Targets High Divorce Rates

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—To help strengthen marriage - and reduce divorce rates - the University of Florida extension service has launched a statewide education program to help couples before they tie the knot.

“The 4- to 6-hour training program, dubbed Before You Tie the Knot, helps prepare couples for marriage, and it doesn’t matter how the family is defined,” said Millie Ferrer, interim associate dean for extension with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “The workshop series consists of topics that are very important to anyone who is planning to get married.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Thomas Jeffries, director of the Institute of Microbial and Biochemical Technology at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wis., will speak April 21 at the University of Florida’s John Gray Distinguished Lecture series. The topic of his presentation is Wood Product Innovations Through Biotechnology.

Jeffries’ lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 10 a.m. at the Paramount Hotel in Gainesville. His lecture keynotes the 35th annual spring symposium for the Florida Division of the Society of American Foresters. Hosted by UF’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, the symposium begins April 21 and concludes April 22. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Spreading suburbs could consume almost 3 million acres of Florida’s farmland by the year 2020, a University of Florida researcher predicts.

And more than one-third of those losses will occur in six of Florida’s most-populated counties, where fast-growing cities are encroaching on some of the state’s most productive agricultural areas. (more…)

LAKE ALFRED, Fla.—A three-year pilot program to coordinate citrus programs in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) will be led by Harold Browning, a professor and director of UF’s Citrus Research and Education Center at Lake Alfred. Browning’s appointment became effective March 1.

UF citrus programs in teaching, research and extension are conducted by personnel in campus departments and off-campus research and education centers as well as county extension offices throughout Florida. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A new low-carbohydrate, high-protein food product created by University of Florida researchers could give dieters a new weapon in the battle against obesity.

It’s the “flaquita,” an all-meat tortilla that promises to squeeze the last few carbohydrates out of the low-carb wraps now offered at many restaurants. (more…)
