GAINESVILLE, Fla. — One of the world’s most damaging tomato diseases may have met its match, now that University of Florida researchers have found a way to give plants resistance to tomato yellow leaf curl virus.
A team of researchers at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have created a genetically engineered tomato plant that can shut down the virus, a pathogen that has spread rapidly around the globe, devastating tomato crops and forcing growers to increase their use of expensive and environmentally harmful pesticides. WASHINGTON, D.C.—Eleven faculty and staff members with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences received U.S. Department of Agriculture Honor Awards during ceremonies Friday in Washington, D.C.
The USDA’s highest recognition for outstanding contributions to agriculture and the consumer were presented to Lena Ma, Joe Funderburk, Tim Momol, Steve Olson, Larry Treadaway, John Jackson, Andy King, Ashley Wood, Kathy Sohar, Ron Thomas and Roberto Ramirez. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman presented the awards at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center. (more…)

CITRA, Fla. — An earth-friendly little cucumber may be poised to take over the shelves in your produce aisle, thanks to researchers at the University of Florida.
The beit alpha cucumber — a small, sweet-fleshed vegetable favored by consumers in the Mediterranean and recently popular in Europe — is beginning to find its way to American supermarket shelves, due to the efforts of researchers at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

ORLANDO, Fla.—Norman Borlaug, the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner whose discoveries sparked the Green Revolution in agriculture and saved millions of lives, will be the keynote speaker June 27 at the 1st World Congress of Agroforestry in Orlando, Fla.
The agronomist, whose research has resulted in the production of new cereal grains to help feed the hungry in developing nations, will speak about using agroforestry to bridge the gap between agriculture and the environment. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—A group of 18 students from the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences went to Kansas City, Mo., April 14-16, and brought home a national title at the 2004 National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) student marketing conference.
The NAMA competition included 32 teams and nearly 500 students from the United States and Canada. (more…)
