UF/IFAS Hurricane Recovery Task Force Targets State’s $64 Billion Agricultural And Natural Resource Industries

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—In response to the four back-to-back hurricanes that pummeled Florida over the past six weeks, the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has established a Hurricane Recovery Task Force to assess damage in the state’s $64 billion agriculture and natural resource industries and develop strategies for rapid recovery.
Richard Jones, UF interim senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources, said preliminary estimates by the task force indicate total losses from the storms will require months — and in some cases, years — for full recovery. (more…)

Produced by UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in cooperation with WUFT-FM in the College of Journalism and Communications, Family Album Radio is a two-minute radio series, featuring different topics each weekday. PENSACOLA, Fla.—When Hurricane Ivan swept through the Pensacola area, 38 people found safe refuge from the storm in the University of Florida’s “hurricane house,” which is designed to withstand winds in excess of 140 miles per hour.
“This was a close hit, and the hurricane house came through the storm with no damage,” said Lamar Christenberry, Escambia County extension director with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “Our hurricane house demonstrates that it is possible to build a home that will come through a hurricane such as Ivan.” (more…)

SANFORD, Fla.—Teenage 4-H’ers in Seminole county are making the lives of abused or neglected children a little easier with the help of a new program called Packaged with Care.
“When children are removed from their homes by sheriff’s officers, the children often have only the clothing they are wearing at the time,” said Marie Carling, a family services specialist with the Child Protective Services Division of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office in Sanford, Fla. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Weeks have passed since Florida rode out the first major storm of an active hurricane season, but falling trees could cause injuries and property damage for weeks or months to come, says a University of Florida urban tree specialist.
“The next month or so is going to be a dangerous period,” said Ed Gilman, a professor of environmental horticulture at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “There are trees and branches that have been weakened by storms, and some of them won’t fall for weeks, maybe even longer.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Blueberry varieties developed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) will be marketed in the European Union under a new licensing agreement signed by Florida Foundation Seed Producers Inc. and the Royal group of Sevilla, Spain.
The new licensing agreement does not affect nurseries in Florida and other states that already have access to UF/IFAS-released varieties through Florida Foundation Seed Producers Inc. (more…)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.— Built to withstand winds of more the 140 miles per hour, the University of Florida’s “hurricane house” survived Hurricane Frances when the eye of the storm passed through St. Lucie County.
