Christine Waddill Named Director Of UF/IFAS Southwest Florida Research And Education Center In Immokalee

IMMOKALEE, Fla.—The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has announced several administrative changes at its Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee, effective Sept. 7.
After serving as center director for more than seven years, Edward Hanlon will assume fulltime duties as professor of soil and water science at the facility. Christine Waddill, director of the UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center in Belle Glade, will assume additional duties as director of the Immokalee center, providing leadership and evaluation for the faculty, and making budget decisions. GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As Hurricane Frances bears down the east coast of the U.S, University of Florida, disaster preparedness experts are spreading a simple message: get ready.
“If you’re in the path of a hurricane, you need to know that this is a serious, dangerous thing,” said Jim Selph, DeSoto County extension director for UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. “If you’re told to get ready, you need to get ready. ARCADIA, Fla.—As the cleanup from Hurricane Charley continues — and Florida residents prepare for Hurricane Frances — Florida farmers are dealing with problems ranging from downed fences and missing cattle to loss of income from greenhouses and citrus groves ripped apart by the storm.
In Desoto County, where 60 percent or more of the citrus crop was destroyed, it will take at least three years for producers to get back on their feet, and some may just call it quits,” said Jim Selph, Desoto County extension director with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Howard Johnson, a graduate research professor in the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, received an honorary doctoral degree from The Ohio State University August 29.
Karen Holbrook, president of Ohio State, said the honorary degree recognizes Johnson’s “distinguished career and extraordinary contributions to education, science and scientific policy.” (more…)
