FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Brought into Florida as pets, iguanas are a good example of how exotic animals can become a nuisance in the state, says a University of Florida pest management specialist.
Pet iguanas that have escaped or been released are now well established throughout South Florida and can be found as far north as the Tampa Bay area, said Bill Kern, an assistant professor of entomology with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—P.K. Nair, a distinguished professor of agroforestry at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and his former graduate student, John Bellow, have been selected by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) to receive awards for their scientific contributions.
Nair will receive the Scientific Achievement Award and Bellow will receive the Outstanding Doctoral Research Award in August 2005 at the 12th IUFRO World Congress in Brisbane, Australia. The awards, which include a scroll and $1,500 honorarium, are presented every five years. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—High school teachers and county extension agents can now earn their master of science degree via a new distance education program beginning this month at the University of Florida.
“We knew there was a need for this type of degree program,” said Brian Myers, an assistant professor of agricultural education at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), and coordinator of the online program. “Teachers and extension agents need graduate degrees for career advancement, but many of them live too far from a university to attend regular classes. This distance learning program will allow them to keep their jobs and stay close to home.” (more…)

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—The Florida Folic Acid Coalition, based at the University of Florida, is joining with other public and private groups to launch National Folic Acid Awareness Week, January 24-30, 2005, throughout the state and nation.
The goal of this weeklong event is to make people aware of the importance of folic acid in their diet and its many lifelong benefits, said Gail Rampersaud, a registered dietitian and assistant in nutrition research and education at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, or UF/IFAS. GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Mary Collins, a professor of soil science at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), has been elected president of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), becoming the first woman to lead the 5,700-member international organization.
Her election is a three-year commitment serving on the SSSA executive committee as president-elect, president and past-president. (more…)
