GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Identity theft is not just for adults. Offenses against children are on the rise, and a University of Florida consumer education expert says the problem can actually be worse for younger victims.
“Many parents don’t realize that child identity theft exists, which means the crime often goes undetected for years,” said Mary Harrison, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A process developed at the University of Florida will help Third World farmers keep nutrients in their soil and could eventually allow them to join the fight against global warming.
The process provides a cost-effective way to measure carbon in large plots of land, said James W. Jones, a distinguished professor of agricultural and biological engineering with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Kenneth DeVries has been named assistant vice president for SHARE (Special Help for Agricultural Research and Education) development, the private support program at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, or UF/IFAS. His appointment becomes effective June 27.
In announcing the appointment, Jimmy Cheek, UF senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources, said DeVries’ experience and leadership in university development will be a valuable asset in UF’s upcoming capital campaign, which begins later this year. (more…)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—Sandra Wilson, an associate professor of environmental horticulture at the University of Florida’s Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce, will receive the Teacher Fellow Award from North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) during the organization’s annual meeting in Wooster, Ohio, June 17.
Brian Scully, director of the Fort Pierce center, said Wilson was nominated for the award because of her outstanding research and education programs, including excellent student evaluations of her teaching program in environmental horticulture. (more…)

VERO BEACH, Fla. — With spring rains promising a bumper crop of mosquitoes, some Floridians may consider buying expensive high-tech traps that use carbon dioxide to lure the bloodsuckers. But University of Florida experts warn that buyers who don’t do their homework could still get bitten — in the pocketbook.
Priced from $300 to $1,500, the traps do capture mosquitoes and other biting insects, said Jonathan Day, an entomologist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The real question is whether they will protect a yard from the pests, he said. (more…)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Martin Main, an associate professor of wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) received the 2005 National Wetlands Award for Education and Outreach during May 18 ceremonies in Washington, D.C.
The National Wetlands Awards program honors people who demonstrate extraordinary effort, innovation and excellence in wetland conservation, research or education through programs at the regional, state or local level. Initiated in 1989, the program is co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Institute, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Federal Highway Administration, and National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Donald W. Poucher, assistant vice president for marketing and communications at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, received the Irving Award from the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) in New Orleans on April 27.
The award, which is the highest honor presented by the consortium, is named for Irvin Omtvedt, former vice chancellor of the University of Nebraska’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Omtvedt founded ADEC in 1987 and served as its first chairman of the board. (more…)
