UF Student Erica Der Elected To National FFA Position

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida junior Erica Der has been elected southern region vice president of The National FFA Organization, one of the country’s largest youth groups dedicated to agricultural education.
A native of Plant City, Fla., Der was one of six national officers elected during the FFA annual convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 26-29. She received an $8,000 scholarship as part of the honor. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Four graduates from the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences were honored recently for their outstanding contributions in agriculture and other industries.
Anita Dhople, Atlanta, Ga., and Mason Smoak, Lake Placid, Fla., received the Horizon Award from the college’s Alumni and Friends organization for their contributions to agriculture, natural resources and the life sciences. Bernie Lester, LaBelle, Fla., and Frank “Sonny” Williamson, Okeechobee, Fla., received the organization’s Award of Distinction for their contributions to UF and the agricultural and natural resource industries. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — E.T. York, chancellor emeritus of the State University System of Florida, was honored Nov. 16 with the installation of a plaque at the University of Florida to honor his many years of outstanding service to the state and nation.
The plaque recognizing York as a “Great Floridian” was unveiled in McCarty Hall during ceremonies led by Jimmy Cheek, UF senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Emilio Bruna, an assistant professor in the University of Florida’s wildlife ecology and conservation department, received the UF International Educator of the Year Award during Nov. 15 ceremonies in Gainesville.
The award, which includes a plaque and $5,000, was presented to Bruna by Dennis Jett, dean of UF’s International Center, and Joseph Glover, UF associate provost, at UF’s Keene Faculty Center. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Louis E. “Red” Larson’s longtime leadership in Florida’s dairy industry is being recognized by his four children, who are establishing three endowments at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
The $1.5 million gift, announced Nov. 5 at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences’ annual “Tail Gator” rally prior to the Florida- Vanderbilt football game in Gainesville, has prompted UF officials to name a building in Larson’s honor. UF’s dairy science building will now be known as the L.E. “Red” Larson Dairy Science Building. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Richard Raid, a professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, is the first UF faculty member to receive an Agricultural-Environmental Leadership Award from the state agriculture commissioner.
The award was presented to Raid by Charles Bronson, commissioner of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, at the Oct. 14 meeting of the Florida Farm Bureau in Orlando. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The 2006 “Advanced Master Tree Farmer – Level II” satellite shortcourse, organized by a committee of extension foresters at various forestry schools in the southern United States, will be offered from Feb. 7 through March 21.
Chris Demers, forest stewardship coordinator at the University of Florida’s School of Forest Resources and Conservation, said the advanced short course is designed for landowners, extension agents and others who have participated in the “Master Tree Farmer” basic course or who have a working knowledge of basic forest management concepts.
