GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Hurricanes and other natural disasters can turn your world upside down, but don’t let them devastate your dining habits, advises a University of Florida expert.
If there’s no power or running water for cooking, a steady diet of candy, chips and take-out fast food might seem appealing – not to mention easy – but focusing on healthy foods will help you weather the crisis better, said Linda Bobroff, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida’s 5 million acres of home and commercial lawns may need fertilizer, but its water resources don’t – so University of Florida researchers have embarked on a landmark study to verify the effectiveness of current state lawn-care recommendations.
Funded by the state Department of Environmental Protection, the five-year, $3.5 million study is UF’s largest turfgrass research project ever, said Laurie Trenholm, an associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and one of the study’s principal investigators. The research focuses on nitrogen and phosphorus, essential plant nutrients that pose significant threats to Florida’s water quality. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — With thousands of boats expected on Florida’s waterways this Memorial Day weekend, University of Florida extension agents say sailors should be wary of lost or abandoned crab traps that can wreak havoc on propellers and engines.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — On the island where Christopher Columbus may have first set foot in the New World, a University of Florida entomologist has made another intriguing discovery related to sea travel – but this one involves termites.
A research team that included Rudolf Scheffrahn, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, found a previously unknown termite species on San Salvador, part of a 700-island chain east of Florida that includes the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida researchers may have good news for disappointed consumers who want to know why their Mother’s Day roses just don’t smell as good as they used to.
Harry Klee, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, says a breakthrough discovery in tomatoes could lead to better-smelling roses. The genetically improved flowers could be on the market in just a few years. (more…)
