UF Extension Agents Can Help Seniors Understand Medicare Prescription Options

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — For thousands of Florida’s senior citizens, understanding the new Medicare Part D prescription-drug coverage plan could be a little easier – thanks to counseling available through the University of Florida’s extension service.
In 26 counties, seniors can get free, personalized help reviewing their Medicare Part D options from specially trained extension agents, said Carolyn Wilken, an associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In an effort to protect Florida’s water quality, state regulations governing the application of biosolids to fields, forests and other areas may be changed – but the move could unnecessarily restrict beneficial uses of the material, cautions a University of Florida expert.
Derived from sewage sludge, biosolids can be used to fertilize plants and enrich soil, said George O’Connor, a professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The state recycles about 80 percent of its sludge this way, but critics say biosolids release too much phosphorus, a nutrient considered the state’s No. 1 water-quality concern. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — When world food-production leaders want to know the latest in research, regulation and retailing, they gather at Food Update, an international meeting held each April – and next year, leadership duties for the event will be turned over to Mark McLellan, dean for research and director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
At the most recent Food Update, held April 24 in Fort Myers, Fla., McLellan was voted president-elect of the board of directors for the Food Update Foundation, a nonprofit organization that produces the meeting. The foundation is a coalition of food-industry executives, academic leaders and government officials committed to facilitating constructive discussion on food processing and policy. (more…)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Built to withstand winds of more than 140 mph, the new “hurricane house” at the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center will be dedicated May 25 and open to the public May 26, just days before the official start of the 2006 hurricane season.
“This hurricane house demonstrates that it is possible to build a home that will come through a category 4 or 5 hurricane with little or no damage,” said Van Waddill, director of the Fort Lauderdale center, which is part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — P.K. Nair, a distinguished professor of agroforestry at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, has been selected to receive the Humboldt Research Award – also known as the Humboldt Prize – which is Germany’s highest research award for senior scientists in the United States.
The award, including a 50,000 Euro stipend (about $60,000) for future research, will be presented to Nair later this year by the Alexander Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany. He was nominated for the award by professional colleagues in Germany. Award winners are also invited to develop research projects of their own choice in Germany in cooperation with colleagues for periods between six months and one year. (more…)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — George Hochmuth, director of the University of Florida’s North Florida Research and Education Center in Quincy, has been named associate dean for research with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
In announcing the appointment, which becomes effective June 1, Mark McLellan, dean for research, said Hochmuth comes to the office with a broad background of experience in agriculture, agricultural research and administration. (more…)
