Florida youth to celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 1-7

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Almost a quarter-million Florida 4-H members will celebrate and share their accomplishments within their communities during National 4-H Week, Oct. 1-7. Counties across the state will observe the week with proclamations, events and community service activities.

National 4-H Week is also a time for local clubs to thank community supporters and recruit new members, said Marilyn Norman, state 4-H leader and an associate dean with the University of Florida’s Cooperative Extension Service, which administers Florida’s 4-H program. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — As investigators narrow the search for the source of E. coli-tainted spinach to just a few farms in three California counties, researchers suggest it may be just as important to examine how the plants acquired and carried the bacteria as it is to find the original point of contamination.

Conventional wisdom holds that harmful bacteria on fruits and vegetables are the remnants of contamination skulking on the exterior of the plants — easily washed away by conventional surface sterilization techniques. But University of Florida microbiology experts believe the recent rash of spinach-related E. coli infections may be instead linked to swarms of the pathogen lurking inside the leafy greens. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Internationally known soil researcher James M. Davidson, the University of Florida’s vice president for agriculture and natural resources from 1992 to 1998, died Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, after a long illness. He was 72.

To honor Davidson, a Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the University City Church of Christ, 4626 NW 8th Ave., Gainesville, Fla. Officiating will be Steve Williams, former minister of University City Church of Christ. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Floridians with a growing passion for gardening and home horticulture will soon have a new source of help – on Oct. 2 the University of Florida launches a new radio series, “Gardening in a Minute,” providing information from experts with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

The one-minute program will air on WUFT-FM Classic 89 in Gainesville and WJUF-FM Nature Coast 90 in Inverness during the 2 p.m. hour and again at 6:18 p.m., Monday through Friday. Both are public radio stations with coverage areas including 19 counties in North Central and Mid-Florida. (more …)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Road warriors, it may be time to hug a tree. In a few years, you could find yourself filling your gas tank with ethanol derived from specially bred black cottonwood trees — and at prices not seen since the 1990s.

Researchers from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, in conjunction with 33 scientific institutions worldwide, have mapped out the genome of the black cottonwood tree, a prime candidate for use in new “biomass” fuel production methods that could someday cut our reliance on petroleum and reduce pollution. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Bovine reproductive endocrinologist Geoffrey Dahl, a professor of animal sciences with the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has been appointed chairman of the University of Florida’s animal sciences department. The appointment became effective July 28.

Dahl succeeds Glen Hembry, a UF animal sciences professor who became chairman in 2000 when the department was created by merging UF’s animal, poultry and dairy science programs. Hembry also led the animal science program from 1990 to 2000. (more …)
