GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Five University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences students received awards during a recent agronomy and soil science conference held last month in Cincinnati.

The conference, joint meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America and the Soil Science Society of America, was attended by more than 4,000 people and included participants from land-grant universities across the U.S.

In a paper competition hosted by the Crop Science Society of America, students in the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences agronomy department placed first, third and fifth out of 12 contestants in the forage and grazinglands category.

Kim Mullenix won first place for her talk, “Growth Habit of Rhizoma Peanut Cultivars Affects Establishment and Spread When Strip-planted in Bahiagrass Sod.”

André Aguiar placed third for his talk, “Effects of Stocking Rate on ‘Jiggs’ Bermudagrass Forage Characteristics and Animal Performance.”

Nick Krueger won fifth place for his talk, “Mixed Grazing by Cattle and Goats for the Control of Broadleaf Weeds in Rhizoma Peanut-Grass Pastures.”

Mullenix and Krueger are advised by professor Lynn Sollenberger and Aguiar by associate professor Joao Vendramini, both in the agronomy department. Sollenberger is based in Gainesville and Vendramini at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center in Ona.

UF/IFAS students were also honored during the Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences undergraduate portion of the meeting.

Representing the UF Agronomy and Soils Club, the students received second place in the Club Poster Contest and made it to the semifinals in the Quiz Bowl.

Two students, Joseph Kibiwott and Blaire Colvin, also won awards during this portion of the meeting.

Kibiwott, a soil and water sciences student, won first place in the National Speech Contest for his talk, “The Role of Land-Grant Universities in Promoting Agriculture and the Role of American Farmers in Global Agriculture.” He is advised by James Bonczek, a senior lecturer in the soil and water science department.

Colvin, a plant science major in the agronomy department, received first place in the National Student Research Symposium Oral contest for her talk, “Digital Analysis System to Evaluate Peanut Maturity: Predicting Yield and Grade.” She is advised by Diane Rowland, an associate professor in agronomy.
