UF/IFAS News Release8.30.99 UF Climate Change, Pest Control And Agriculture Conference Will Be Held In Gainesville On Thursday, Sept. 9By Chuck Woods
GAINESVILLE---U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner will be among a group of experts from across the nation scheduled to speak at the University of Florida Conference on Climate Change, Pest Control and Agriculture on Thursday, September 9, 1999 at the University Centre Hotel in Gainesville. Browner has been invited to speak at the noon luncheon. Organized by the UF's Department of Food and Resource Economics and sponsored by the UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, the University of California at Berkeley and EPA, the one-day conference is designed for congressional staffers and policymakers from various government agencies and agricultural commodity groups. The conference is being planned by Andrew Schmitz, eminent scholar and professor in the UF's food and resource economics department, and David Zilberman, chair of the agricultural and resource economics department at UC, Berkeley. "The conference program will include one general session on the impact of climate change policies on agriculture and three or four sessions relating climate change to pest control," said Schmitz. "We also will examine the potential role of agriculture as a sink to climate change gases, particularly the ability of forests and other agricultural crops to lock up or sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Practices that lead to carbon sequestration and non-tillage will be discussed." UF President John Lombardi is scheduled to welcome participants at 8:15 a.m. He will be followed briefly by welcoming remarks from Andrew Manale, senior program analyst for EPA's Office of Policy. Registration fees, which include the noon luncheon and 5:30 p.m. social, are $125 per person; $30 for students. Checks should be made out to Climate Change Conference and mailed to: H. Carole Schmitz, University of Florida, PO Box 110240, Gainesville, Fl. 32611-0240. Those who plan to attend the conference should register in advance so that name tags and receipts can be prepared. Attendees may also register at the registration desk from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 9.
