Ann Wilkie, environmental microbiologist with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, records data, Tuesday, 11/21, from a new high-tech anaerobic digester at UF's Dairy Research Unit near Gainesville. The digester processes dairy, poultry and swine wastes, reducing odors by 90 percent compared to conventional treatment systems. Wilkie's system also produces methane gas that can be used as an alternative energy source. (AP photo: Tara Piasio, University of Florida/IFAS)
